Community Healthcare System is now Powers Health12Growth, Knowledge & InnovaonGraduate registered nurses face mulple challenges as they embark in their new profession. Some areas of concern include (a) role transion, (b) performance expectaons in a high-acuity environment with signicant technological advancements, and (c) an increased level of accountability regarding nursing quality indicators graduate nurses are not clinically prepared to meet the demands and expectaons in today’s healthcare environment. To foster retenon among new graduate nurses, it is vitally important to design and deploy iniaves that respond to and address workforce needs.Nursing sta at Community Healthcare System developed goals to establish competence, build condence and create loyalty among graduate nurses. The system’s Nurse Residency Program (NRP) was redeveloped with the addion of Simulaon Labs in all areas including Neuro, OBGYN and Medical/Surgical. Simulaon Labs allow sta the opportunity to provide hands-on learning in a variety of clinical scenarios using high-tech paent simulators. The addional of specialty simulaon has proven to support the graduate nurses as they transioned in the profession and enhance care to paents. “We can teach nurses so many things in a real-world seng that is more impacul than trying to do in a didacc course,” said Daniel Heredia, Registered Nurse and Manager of Educaonal Services at Community Hospital. The goal of the Simulaon Lab is to prepare, educate and foster crical thinking, said Jean Gardner, Director of Educaon for Community Healthcare System and Chief Nursing Ocer for Community Stroke & Rehabilitaon Center in Crown Point.Simulaon Laboratory provides nursing skills development to reduce nursing turnover2023 Turnover Compared to National and State Data0510152025Indiana DataNational DataCommunity Hospital St. CatherineHospital St. Mary Medical Center Community Stroke &Rehabilitation Center 13.718.317.319.6The Simulaon Lab oers real-world paent scenarios to help nurses train and gain condence in their skillsets.

Community Healthcare System is now Powers Health19Paent ExperiencePaent & Family Advisory Council provide a voice in careCommunity Healthcare System nurses play a key role in developing and maintaining strong Paent & Family Advisory Council (PFAC). PFAC oers paents and families the opportunity to partner and provide guidance on how to improve the paent-family experience. The goal of the PFAC is to create a more paent-centered approach to the care delivered every day. Engaging paents has shown to improve the quality and safety of the care delivered, lower the costs of care and reduce medical error. Our healthcare teams are commied to creang an environment where the needs of paents and families drive the healthcare experience. Through our Paent and Family Advisory Councils, our hospitals welcome paents or family members to join us and share their perspecves.PFAC members do not need any special qualicaons to be an adviser; however, they or their family members must have received services at the hospital within the last three years. Through their unique perspecve, advisers help shape changes to improve hospital quality and safety and enhance the overall paent and family experience at our hospitals. MyChart BedsidePaents at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System use an innovave app called MyChart Bedside as an added connecon to their care while in the hospital. By downloading the app to their personal tablets or phones, paents can use it to review menus, daily rounes, lab results, vital signs and informaon regarding their care team. Once at home, their MyChart Bedside informaon can be transferred to their regular MyChart account.Messages from paents can help improve care by allowing sta to address the paents’ concerns.
